Mamula Fortress stands proudly at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor, embodying an exceptionally bold architectural vision that has restored dignity and renewed purpose to a landmark left abandoned for more than 80 years. Today, the fortress once again holds a commanding presence within the landscape, carefully balancing its powerful historical identity with a refined contemporary hospitality experience.
The fortress has been meticulously restored with the aim of preserving its rich historical and cultural heritage while transforming it into a truly unique destination – the only island spa hotel with an integrated museum. The reconstruction was carried out in accordance with the highest conservation, architectural and construction standards, with particular attention paid to preserving the authenticity of the original structure and the extraordinary natural character of the island.
New functions and spatial programs were carefully adapted to the geometry and proportions of the existing spaces rather than imposed upon them. The functional schemes respect the rhythm of the historic walls, vaulted interiors and original circulation routes, allowing the new interventions to remain discreet and in constant dialogue with the existing architecture. The interior design follows the same restrained approach. Modest, simple forms and carefully selected furniture allow the character of the fortress to remain dominant, while bespoke artisanal details celebrate craftsmanship, local tradition and material authenticity.
Warm shades of oak appear throughout the interiors, introducing softness and warmth against the robust stone surfaces and creating a subtle balance between historical character and contemporary comfort.
As guests move through the island, its paths, corridors and passages continuously open toward unexpected views of the sea and surrounding landscape. These fresh, seemingly infinite perspectives become an essential part of the experience, strengthening the connection between architecture, history and nature.
